چکیده

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 standards are one of today’s fastest growing technologies in businesses, schools, and homes, for good reasons. As WLAN deployments increase, so does the challenge to provide these networks with security. Security risks can originate either due to technical lapse in the security mechanisms or due to defects in software implementations. Standard Bodies and researchers have mainly used UML state machines to address the implementation issues. In this paper we propose the use of GSE methodology to analyse the incompleteness and uncertainties in specifications. The IEEE 802.11i security protocol is used as an example to compare the effectiveness of the GSE and UML models. The GSE methodology was found to be more effective in identifying ambiguities in specifications and inconsistencies between the specification and the state machines. Resolving all issues, we represent the robust security network (RSN) proposed in the IEEE 802.11i standard using different GSE models.

Security Analysis and Improvements on WLANs

IEEE 802.11i standard defines the security specifications of IEEE 802.11 series Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). It is the replacement of the old security standard named Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), and it aims to eliminate all known attacks against WEP. It certainly provides solutions to the confidentiality, mutual authentication and integrity aspects of the WLAN security but not the ava...

Evolution of Wireless LAN Security Standards

As wireless LANs (WLANs) become ubiquitous, the issue of network security in the wireless domain becomes one of crucial interest. In response to security concerns, the IEEE standard 802.11 proposed a protocol known as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). However, the discovery of serious loopholes in WEP had a negative impact on the deployment of WLANs for corporate networks, and possibly on the gro...

Fast Pre-authentication with Minimized Overhead and High Security for WLAN Handoff

User mobility in WLANs becomes more and more popular because of wide deployment of WLANs and numerous applications on it. Some of these applications, for example multimedia applications, require fast handoffs among access points to maintain the quality of service. In order to support multimedia applications for roaming users, IEEE 802.11i defines pre-authentication to reduce the re-authenticati...

Design, implementation, and performance analysis of DiscoSec - Service pack for securing WLANs

To improve the already tarnished reputation of WLAN security, the new IEEE 802.11i security standard provides means for an enhanced user authentication and strong data confidentiality. However, the standard focuses on securing higher-layer data, i.e., protecting IEEE 802.11 data frames. Management frames used for connection administration are left unprotected and a wide spectrum of known attack...
